The Headless Ghost of Crystal Lake: Lake Mary's Darkest Legend

Lake Mary, Florida, looks a little different after dark.

Hidden behind the quiet neighborhoods and polished streets is a story that reaches back to Florida's frontier days — a real unsolved murder that eventually became one of Seminole County's strangest ghost legends.
Samuel McMillan disappeared in the early 1880s. Weeks later, his body was discovered submerged in Crystal Lake. He had been killed, his body weighted beneath the water — and his head was missing.
A suspect was arrested and ultimately acquitted. McMillan's murder was never solved.
But that's where history starts turning into legend.
Over the years, stories surrounding Crystal Lake have included sightings of a headless figure near the water, unexplained disturbances along the shoreline and, in one of the stranger versions of the tale, a flaming skull rising from the lake.
Orlando North tourism still includes Crystal Lake among the area's haunted places and identifies Margaret Wesley Park in Lake Mary as a place from which visitors can see the lake.
Is Samuel McMillan still wandering around Crystal Lake looking for what was taken from him?
Probably not a question we're going to answer.
But more than a century later, people are still telling his story.
And around here, that's enough to earn a pin on the Bone & Palm map. 📍👻
